Clowning in Contact
Facilitated by Ecstatic Dance San Diego Facilitator, Victori May
8:00pm - 8:45pm
Life Long Dancer, Life Long GoofBall, Victori Violet has found the medicine of laughter accessible through the clown community and contact communities. Clowning is a sacred art of story-telling, and what is dance if not communicating our current stories and emotions?
This workshop will lead participants to embodying full body (and face) expression! Us grown up theatre kids will love it, and those new to improv will have fun and silly prompts to explore their own self-expression. All of this silliness will be sprinkled into the basics to intermediate, maybe even some advanced, contact improv/ partner dancing skills! Feel free to dress clowny (whatever that means to you! Colorful, stripey, polka dotted etc!). And prepare to dance with friends, making contact, using deep listening and overtly comedic expression. No experience necessary, first-timers welcome!
Victori has been dancing since birth and facilitating movement containers since 2018, inheriting Tuesday Dance Jam pre-pandemic, and now co-facilitating Ecstatic Dance San Diego.
“Ecstatic dance is the chance to transmute our internal feelings, to external movements with the goal of creating more space for joyful memories in our muscles, without ever talking about it. It’s not “talk therapy”, it’s dance therapy or movement medicine as I like to call it.” ~ Victori
Ecstatic Dance Journey
Featuring DJake
9pm-11pm
Djake, Jake Glasser, invokes of a sense of clown-y play and sensual energetic movement. With humble beginnings in contact dance, immersive art and the festival world, Djake has cultivated a diverse soundscape that attempts to include different rhythms and aesthetically pleasing sonic textures from all over the world. After years of hosting Arcata Ecstatic Dance and nurturing a community-based immersive art center, Djake has lived deeply in the rhythm of creative movement. Countless nights spent dancing until sunrise have left him steeped in a swirl of fresh, soul-stirring musical selections.
Djake’s sets are crafted to invite play, with a spirit of humor and theatrical movement woven throughout. At their core, they invoke a sense of elsewhere—a brief, grounding pause in the midst of a chaotic world.
Closing Sound Seranade by Leila Munla
Leila is a Lebanese born artist raised in Beirut and currently based in California. Drawing from her Middle Eastern roots, along with influences from the orient and spiritual medicine music, she weaves her own journey into relatable lyrics that speak to the heart. As a deep lover of nature, the elements, and the spiritual forces that guide our path, Leila’s music reminds us to connect to our truest essence.
