Frank Doorhof’s Digital Classroom is sponsored by BenQ & Rogue.
Powered by Calibrite (calibration done right, the best solutions for photographers, filmmakers, designers, and content creators who love color and demand the very best tools for their color-critical workflow) and Cascable (tethering software for the iPad & Mac).
If you understand how light works, you can control it, which means you can photograph anything. Not just models, but products too. And the great thing about products? They don’t talk, they don’t need food or water, and they stay perfectly still.
In this episode of the Digital Classroom, we’ll be building a set to create glamorous, luxurious product photos. And you can participate too, online and for free.
Wednesday, May 14, 3 PM CEST: Digital Classroom Glamorous Product Photography
Frank will demonstrate the difference between flat lighting and more dynamic, creative lighting. Sometimes, clients request flat lighting and tight close-ups—think webshops or catalogues. But once you understand how that works, you can push your creativity further by adding colors, smoke, and more atmosphere to your images.
Product photography from start to finish.
Every photoshoot starts with the basics—tools, like the light meter and color checker, and techniques that help you work more efficiently, like a light meter and a color checker. Frank always shoots tethered with Cascable to the iPad or Mac, so you’ll be able to follow along with his results in real-time.
After the shoot, some images might need retouching. Although Frank’s motto is: Why fake it when you can create it, and he tries to get everything right in camera, that does not always work.
So, Frank will show you how he enhances his photos, including the software and plug-ins he uses to get the best results. Frank also works with a calibrated monitor, ensuring that the colors you see on screen are accurate and true to life. That way, your final images look just as good on print or online as they do in the studio.
We use three different cameras in our studio to give you the full picture: from lighting setups and close-ups of the product, to wide shots of Frank in action as he adjusts the lights. And thanks to tethered shooting, you’ll see everything—including the mistakes.
