The Regular Army During the Black Hawk War

The Illinois militia, comprised of average citizens with little to no military experience, fought the majority of the Black Hawk War. So where was the U.S. Army?

Historian and retired minister Daniel Swinson will explore the professional army's role in a special presentation at the Apple River Fort. Beginning with General Henry Atkinson's attempts to avoid bloodshed through to General Winfield Scott's disastrous dash across the country--only to arrive after the war's end, Swinson will cover every (mis)step of the U.S. Army, as well as the typical uniforms, weapons, and other daily duties of the average infantryman in 1832.

Presentation to take place in the Apple River Fort's Interpretive Center. Attendance is free, but seating is limited.
