9th Annual Femme Frontera Filmmaker Showcase

Femme Frontera returns with its 9th Annual Showcase, presenting seven compelling short films from the U.S. and Mexico. This year’s lineup highlights powerful, personal narratives exploring themes such as cultural identity, migration, chronic pain, emotional vulnerability, and love beyond borders. From the story of a trans makeup artist and Guadalupana witch, to the quiet hope in a migrant’s farewell, each film offers a tender, bold, and intimate portrait of empowerment,  resilience, and renewal. This special curation will continue the FF Showcase legacy of embarking on a national and international Showcase tour, screening at multiple venues and film festivals across the globe.

THE FILMS

• At Dusk I Kiss Your Body Burnt 7:52 (U.S., California/El Paso/Juarez) Dir. Victor 'Yayo' Meza - “A young man struggles to write a letter to his lover.”

• The Color of Sky / Color Cielo 9:14 (U.S, California) - “The hope that lingers in the farewell.”

• Super High: A Period Piece 8:59 (U.S.) Dir. Bianca D. Lambert - “Amanda battles excruciating period pain caused by fibroids. Desperate for relief, she experiments with a celebrity cannabis brand’s edibles. A dosage mishap catapults her into a surreal, anxiety-filled journey until she awakens.”

• Ternura Radical 15:12 (Juarez, MX) Dir. Celina Galicia - “Ternura Radical (Radical Tenderness) is a documentary that amplifies the voices in the fight for justice for Isabel Cabanillas, an artist and social activist murdered in an act of femicide, and the relentless search for Esmeralda Castillo Rincón, who disappeared in Ciudad Juárez. Through the lens of women who transform their pain into art, the documentary portrays a powerful form of protest and resistance against gender violence and impunity. These stories reflect the harsh reality faced by many families across the region and Mexico, highlighting the courage of those who continue to seek justice.”

• To Be a Bruja 14:22 (Xalapa, Veracruz) Dir. Carolina Erives - “Amanda Montejo is a trans woman, make up artist, Guadalupana and a witch. This documentary portrait explores different facets of her spirituality and fragments of her past, revealing the duality of her being.”

• I Killed Lucca / Yo maté a Lucca 16:35 (Mexico) Dir. Ana Moreno Hernández - “Carmen experiences a panic attack when faced with the challenge of opening up emotionally to her partner, Lucía. Meanwhile, two soccer commentators narrate the episode as if it were a live match. To move forward, Carmen must confront her deepest fear and make a decision that will forever change their relationship.”

• Wherever That May Be 11:27 (U.S. Las Cruces) Dir. E.N. Cole - “In this story, we follow the journey of Rose, a young woman whose life is turned upside down when her health takes a turn. She loses her dream job as a dance instructor, her partner leaves her, and she moves back in with her outgoing, fun loving grandmother named Jo. This story is a role-swap of what society typically expects of women their respective ages. Jo and Rose’s dynamic challenges a stereotype of what it means to be healthy.”
