Horse Soldier’s founders were members of the first U.S. Army Special Forces unit to enter Afghanistan after the September 11, 2001 attacks. In the weeks following 9/11, this hand-selected detachment of 12 Green Berets from the 5th Special Forces Group—later named the “Horse Soldiers”—entered Afghanistan on horseback. Their clandestine mission marked the first time U.S. troops had ridden to war on horseback since WWII. This incredible story was brought to life in the 2018 action war drama film 12 Strong, which highlights their bravery and dedication.
Vince Makela, a native of St. Louis, MO, is a U.S. Army retired Sergeant Major who served as a Green Beret during his distinguished 32-year career. He was a member of Army Special Forces team ODA 595, the first unit to land in Afghanistan in response to the attacks on our nation. Their historic and unconventional warfare actions earned them the moniker “The Horse Soldiers,” which has been documented in numerous leading books, films, and documentaries. Today, Vince serves as a Brand Ambassador for the internationally acclaimed ultra-premium Horse Soldier Bourbon. He and his wife currently reside in Washington State, and Vince enjoys his Horse Soldier Bourbon neat or on the rocks.
