This class offers a space for the collective to approach, embody, and revel in the possibility and potential of dance: not as form, but as a generative force. Drawing from core principles in Alec’s practice – dreaming, worlding, and becoming – we’ll explore how dance blurs the boundaries of the body and opens portals to new ways of being and relating.
The class begins with a prompted self-reflection to surface personal and communal connections to key ideas. We’ll take this thinking into the body through gentle somatic embodiment and improvisational exploration. Here, movers will surrender themselves to the imaginary, ride shifting temporalities, inhabit new bodies, and engage with realms beyond the self.
We’ll land together at the end to ruminate on the reflections, insights, questions, and impossibilities that emerged through the shared movement practice.
Alec Turgeon (he/him) is a transsexual dance artist from amiskwacîwâskahikan (Edmonton, AB), based in Tiohtià:ke (Montreal, QC). Alec studied dance at Concordia University, receiving the James Saya Award upon completing the program in 2024. His work is rooted in unfiltered curiosity, exposing the multiplicities embedded in the human experience and crafting a delicate space to confront these realities. He is motivated by the spaces of friction and entanglement that emerge through crafting movement, as many unique perspectives, temporalities, and trainings collide. Alec is excited by dance’s ability to orient collective focus and generate transcendental empathy between mover(s) and witness(es). His choreographic work has been presented at Mile Zero Dance, Nextfest, Studio 303, Concordia’s FOFA Gallery, and the Art Matters Festival. Lately, he is invested in radio transmission, physical media, trans* affective states, DIY low-tech and the invisible.
