"Why I Stayed …? A Gothic Review of Life” is a darkly comedic and confessional solo show by Estonian stand-up comedian Aleksandr Popov. Inspired by a real-life near-suicide experience, the show explores depression, failure, and reasons one finds to deny life, all through a blend of dry humour, sarcasm, and raw vulnerability.
It's a "retrospective on life not fully lived". After a restart of sorts I am focusing on advancing myself through my comedy. This show is the most personal I've done so far - it is not just about having a laugh at my expense. I want the people to see that it's really about laughing at me while thinking about themselves and their vulnerabilities.
My show is about a series of mishaps and attempts at getting help way too late. And then finding myself at the precipice of a final decision thinking "why can't I ..." and realising that I have been making a joke out of myself since day one!
"Why I Stayed …? A Gothic Review of Life” is born from the moment I chose to say goodbye — to a life that once felt impossible to keep holding onto. I was on the verge of losing my home, my body was breaking down, and my mind was a storm of regrets from futures that never happened. I wanted to leave. And I watched myself—like an uninvited guest—caught in the battle between body and mind, quietly taking steps toward the end. But somehow… I stayed. I guess I wanted to see the alternative ending after all.”
Aleksandr Popov is a Tallinn, Republic of Estonia based stand-up comedian and bouncer, who also dabbles as a high-school teacher and college professor.
