A glorious, spell-binding, semi-staged performance of Oliver Tarney’s St Mark Passion will be given by the Durham Singers in the magnificent, historic, Pugin-designed St Cuthbert’s
Chapel, Ushaw, Durham, on 28 March 2026.
Written between 2017 and 2019, the work draws on many of the parables and miracles from Mark’s gospel to frame the narrative, giving a voice to those who are traditionally voiceless –
a sacred and secular rendering of the events surrounding Easter.
Directed by the highly acclaimed Donna Stirrup, the event will feature seven world-class soloists:
Julian Close – Barabbas
Paul Grant – Pilate
Darwin Prakash – Jesus
Alessandro Fisher – Judas
Nicholas Morris – Peter
Katy Thomson – the maid
Beth Moxon – the bleeding woman
alongside the Durham Singers, a professional semichorus and the Durham Singers Camerata.
This concert is certain to move and challenge you, asking all of us about what it means to have faith in the modern world. Ticket prices are £20 adults, £10 students, free for under-16s, and include a high-quality programme and the reception after the concert, when there will be an opportunity to meet our conductor, our soloists and all those who have collaborated in this unique and ambitious endeavour.
