Gaelic in Dundee

Have you ever been told Gaelic was never spoken here? Nothing could be further from the truth. The Gaelic language and its speakers have been intertwined with Dundee's history for centuries. Place names in Dundee tell us that Gaelic was widely spoken in the area in pre-medieval times. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Gaelic-speaking immigrants from Highland Perthshire and elsewhere worked in Dundee's textile industry and founded institutions such as the Gaelic Church in Albert Square and the Dundee Highland Society. More recent years have seen a revival of interest in Gaelic language and culture, through the activity of Dundee Gaelic Choir and others, and census data suggests the number of Gaelic speakers in the city is once again on the rise.

Come and hear about Dundee's Gaelic history through place names, people and stories and learn how all of us in Dundee are still using Gaelic every day.

Nicky MacCrimmon is a researcher into the Gaelic place names, folklore and history of eastern Scotland.

The talk will take place in Lecture Theatre 2. Refreshments will be served from 6pm. Admission is free for members - donations requested from non-members.
