How I Found Myself in the Midwest is a passionate testimony to the power of moving forward by going back home. Steve Grove, a Midwestern native, shares hope in going local. Just after turning forty, Steve left Silicon Valley as a Google executive to move to his home state of Minnesota with his family. Steve began a position in state government with Governor Tim Walz which ended up being during the pandemic and the George Floyd murder. Steve shares insights about Minnesota and the Midwest and why he is optimistic about America’s future. How I Found Myself in the Midwest will move and inspire you, no matter where you choose to call home.
Steve Grove is CEO and publisher of the Minnesota Star Tribune. Previously, he was Minnesota’s commissioner of employment and economic development. Before moving back to his home state, Grove built a career in Silicon Valley as an executive at Google and YouTube, most recently as the founding director of the Google News Lab and previously as YouTube's first head of news and politics. A graduate of Claremont McKenna College with a master’s degree from the Harvard Kennedy School, Grove has written for several national publications and has served as an advisor to the White House and State Department on counter-terrorism strategy. Steve and his wife Mary are the co-founders of Silicon North Stars, a nonprofit that helps underserved youth find career pathways in technology. They are the proud parents of eight-year-old twins, a yellow lab, and two farm cats.
Emily Larson is a lifelong Minnesotan, a former Mayor of Duluth, and a full-time admirer of Lake Superior. Larson was elected mayor of Duluth in November 2015 and won 72% of the vote. She was the first female mayor in the city's history. Emily was born and raised in St. Paul. She graduated with a bachelor's degree in social work from the College of St. Scholastica and later earned a master's degree from the University of Minnesota-Duluth. Emily, and her husband Doug Zaun, have two sons. She is an active trail runner and fitness enthusiast. An avid memoir reader, she loves the language of Steve's story and its weave of the familiar. If you've found yourself at home here, you'll find something to love in this book, and this evening together.
