About the event

Crude water: Is it Safe to Drink from Private Wells in Northeast Iowa?
“Crude water: Is it Safe to Drink from Private Wells in Northeast Iowa?” will be the topic of a public presentation in Dubuque on Monday, September 15.

David Cwierty, director of the Center for Health Effects of Environmental Contamination (CHEEC) at the University of Iowa, will speak at 6:30 p.m. in Blades Chapel, University of Dubuque, corner of University Ave. and Algona St.

Cwiertny will present his groundbreaking research on private well drinking water quality in the Driftless.

Cwiertny is a professor of civil and environmental engineering and a research engineer at IIHR—Hydroscience and Engineering at the University of Iowa.

CHEEC was established through Iowa’s 1987 Groundwater Protection Act. Their primary activity involves maintaining environmental databases for environmental health research. The Center is involved in a variety of epidemiological studies of rural and urban populations in Iowa, mainly focused on drinking water contaminants and health effects.

Cwiertny has led several public health initiatives, including the Iowa Get the Lead Out water-testing program and public data platforms like Iowa Trust Your Tap and the Iowa Well Forecasting System.

In 2002, Cwiertny was recognized by the University with the Michael J. Brody Award for Faculty Excellence in Service.

The Legacy is co-hosting the meeting with the University’s Department of Natural and Applied Sciences.

The event will also be part of International Day of Peace activities scheduled for September. Groups with their own clean water projects and programs are welcome to attend the September 15 presentation to inform the audience about their work.
