Brier Island Adventure

Meet at 7:20 AM in the Digby Arena parking lot. We will depart at 7:30 heading to East Ferry to catch the 8:30 Ferry to Tiverton. If you are bypassing the arena meet up, make sure you are in East Ferry by 8:20. From Tiverton we will travel to Freeport (no time to stop) to take the ferry to Westport on Brier Island. Once in Westport, turn left on Water St. and travel the short distance to the Big Meadow Bog Trail. The trail is an easy hike, totalling 1.6 km return. We’ll take our time at this important ecological location. From the Digby Trails website: “The Big Meadow Bog on Brier Island is within the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of Nova Scotia. It is important as one of only two locations of the endangered Eastern Mountain Avens in Nova Scotia, found otherwise only in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, USA. The Trail is a new boardwalk, specifically constructed to be entirely accessible. It brings visitors close to and over a fragile ecosystem, without damaging the flora and fauna usually distant from the edge.”

Brier Island Coastal Trail
Leaving Big Meadow Bog we will stop at RE Robicheau store before we head to Western Light for part two of our hiking journey. From the parking lot at Western Light, “the Brier Island Coastal Trail crosses 4 km of gently rolling seaside meadows and wide-open beach within the Nature Conservancy of Canada’s Brier Island Nature Reserve. One end of the trail starts at the picturesque red and white striped Western Light at Western Point – aptly named when you consider it the most westerly point of land in Nova Scotia.” (Digby Trails Website info) We’ll hike to Pond Cove and return so the easy-moderate hike will total 8 km.

Bring a lunch, water and snacks for the day or plan to eat in Westport.
