Repowering mining on Anglesey
The Parys Mountain High density hydro pumped energy storage project has the potential to be a trailblazer in the UK for long‑duration energy storage, leveraging existing underground infrastructure to reduce cost and environmental impact.
It offers synergies with mining operations for critical metals, renewable energy, local economic benefit, and alignment with national energy security and net zero objectives.
But success depends on scaling up from pilot plant operations, the methodical execution of studies, engagement with communities, regulatory approvals, and securing investment.
Rob Marsden is a mining engineer, consultant and executive. In May 2024, he was appointed chief executive officer of Anglesey Mining plc.
He holds a degree from the Camborne School of Mines, graduating in 1995, and began his career at Rio Tinto, where over 18 years he held technical, operational and management roles in multiple countries including South Africa, Australia, France and the USA.
