Through her photo series Lingering Scars Farzana Hossen tells the stories of women and girls who have been mutilated or murdered in acid, kerosene and petrol attacks. The series documents the profound personal and social impact of this gender based violence. Created in 2017 these photographs continue to resonate - a graphic telling of the prevalence of misogyny and GBV. Bangladesh has achieved notable success in curbing acid-throwing through legal action alongside NGO and media activism, but the root causes of these acts of violence against women persist.

Reports indicate that still today, burn victims arrive at hospitals around Bangladesh. In addition to disfigurement of the face and body, some suffer permanent loss of eyesight and the ability to eat with their mouth. Their injuries are most often caused by their intimate partners, spouses, boyfriends, or the person they refused to love.

Further statistics from Acid Survivors Foundation reveal that 72% of survivors with disfigurements faced harassment, while 79% were likely to suffer from anxiety or depression, underscoring the enduring trauma inflicted by such attacks.
Yet amidst the darkness, there is resilience. In Lingering Scars, women bravely share their stories, offering a glimpse into their lives and the challenges they've overcome. These narratives serve as a reminder of the strength and resilience of survivors, giving voice to those who have been silenced by their oppressors.

In documenting their lives, struggles, and resilience, along with the memories of those who have passed, Lingering Scars aims to shine a light on this dark corner of human existence, advocating for change and empowering survivors to reclaim their voices and their lives.
