FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Des Plaines, IL – June 28, 2025 – On the 4th Saturday in June, local amateur radio operators and the Maine Township Office of Emergency Management (MTOEM) will team up for a unique public event during ARRL Field Day, the largest amateur radio training exercise in North America.
Hosted in partnership with Group 312 Chicago, this event highlights the vital role amateur radio plays in emergency communication when cell towers and internet services go dark.
From 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM, the public is invited to observe live radio demonstrations, engage with emergency management professionals, learn the basics of what to do when disaster strikes, and even try their hand at radio communication at a special “Get on the Air” station.
“This event is about building awareness, strengthening community preparedness, and showing how ham radio continues to be a reliable tool in disaster scenarios,” said Wojtek Gil from Group 312 Chicago.
Jack Wisniewski, Director of the Maine Township Office of Emergency Management, added: “Preparedness starts with awareness—and events like this show how technology and community come together. Amateur radio isn’t just a hobby; it’s a lifeline when everything else fails. Our team will also be there to share essential information on what every household should have ready for an emergency.”
Field Day 2025 is both an educational opportunity and a family-friendly day out. Whether you're a seasoned operator or just curious, come join us and discover how your community stays connected when it matters most.
