About the event

The MTIA Learning Loop
Training Wheels Off! We are offering TWO rides on Monday night! The first, our traditional Signature Monday night ride at 6:30pm and the second is a NEW ride idea we are piloting, “The Learning Loop” from April 7th to June 2nd from 5pm-6pm. Come anytime during that hour to ride.

The Learning Loop is a fun and friendly bike ride designed for beginners, new riders, those intimidated by other group rides and anyone looking to get back into the saddle! Whether you're just starting out, easing into fitness, or looking for a supportive and low-pressure way to learn the ropes of cycling, this ride is perfect for you. Spin with smiles, enjoy some first gear fun, and embrace the joy of riding at your own pace, free of the intimidation of riding with a group, keeping a pace or fearing if you can go the distance. It’s all about having a great time while building confidence, learning new skills, and getting comfortable on two wheels. Grab your bike and join us for an experience that’s all about enjoying the ride, no matter where you're starting from!

From 5pm-6pm we will meet west of the Bill Riley bridge at the back loops of Water Works park near the shelter house and large grassy area. Get here when you are able and ride what you want.

You have two route options. You can ride the main loop (1.7 miles), the back loop (1.7 miles) or any combination of the two. Feel free to ride it as many times as you are comfortable and at your own pace. This is a great opportunity to join others for a positive social and recreational experience. Leaders will be on hand that are knowledgeable and willing to share their expertise for those that want to grow in their skill and ability.

All are welcome to attend.
Helmets are required. It’s good practice to bring hydration, lights and items to change a flat, but not required.

*You must sign a waiver before joining any Major Taylor Iowa ride.

Why ride with us?
There are Major Taylor cycling clubs all over the world and to my knowledge, we are the only cycling club EVER to be named after a cyclist. We are an inclusive bike club that promotes diversity in all areas and cares about equity. We want to grow the bike community by sparking joy for riders and allowing a comfortable and safe space to grow weather you’re joining your first group ride or just out crushing your individual goals on the bike. We are excited to be established in Iowa. Membership is currently open.
Marshall Walter “Major” Taylor was an amazingly talented black athlete from 1878-1932. He was most likely given his nickname “Major” because of his military style clothing he wore as he entertained and performed bike stunts outside his local bike shop in Indianapolis. These performances launched him into becoming the cycling legend known today. He cycled on a track, was a professional road racer, did distance and sprints. The Worcester Whirlwind, as he was also affectionately called, set numerous world records and won both World and National championships all while fighting harsh and cruel racism. Even through such hatred, he, along with those that came alongside him, paved the way for future black athletes, he became the second black world champion in any sport! Even though few know his name, it doesn’t diminish that he was one of the greatest cyclists of his time and his story continues to inspire those that hear it. Through his story and our club hope to advocate for black cyclists by cultivating a supportive community of like minded cyclists that build up, encourage equity and spark passion for the sport of cycling so it can be more accessible regardless of socioeconomic background, ethnicity or experience level.
