Conversations at the Conrad

Alice Van Cleef was born in 1906 and spent her entire life in the Glenwood home that her uncle built, one room at a time. Her father, Elmer, moved to Glenwood from New York and eventually became the manager of Bond Lumber Company. Her mother, Nina Booth Van Cleef, managed the family home and was a talented artist; one of her beautiful paintings of the St. Johns River is displayed in the dining room of the DeLand House.

Alice had a passion for learning and achieved both a bachelor's and a master's degree in chemistry from Stetson University, which was quite rare for women of her time. Her mission in life was teaching, and she dedicated 42 years to educating students in chemistry, physics, and other science subjects at local schools.

Alice is portrayed by Nicki Junkins of the DeLand House Players. Join us as we explore the life of this remarkable woman.
