7:00 – Technical Presentation
Polymers offer a complex challenge for both material characterization and failure analysis. A series of abridged case studies will illustrate a variety of polymer applications, and accordingly a variety of techniques necessary to characterize and evaluate failures. These cases include: a) ballistic glass using photoelasticity analysis, environmental stress cracking (ESC) testing, and stress-strain testing, b) mirror mastic failure focusing on Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) analysis along with hardness testing and polarized light microscopy (PLM), c) expansion joint failure analysis via uFTIR, pyrolysis Gas Chromatography Mass Spectroscopy (PY-GC-MS), hardness, and stress-strain testing, d) roof failure from hail impact with analysis of impact testing, fractography, and microscopy, and e) waterproofing membrane failure using uFTIR, Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC), PLM, hotstage microscopy, and fluorescence microscopy.
Presenter: Andre Anthony “Tony” Havics, PE pH2, LLC
Mr. Havics is an Honors graduate from Georgia Institute of Technology with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering. He is a registered Professional Engineer (PE) with nearly 40 years of experience in microscopical characterization on a variety of materials including biological, geological, metallurgical, and several hazardous ones. He is a past President of the Failure Analysis Society (FAS) and a former Chairman of the Indianapolis Chapter of ASM. He is a member of the ASTM E30 Forensic and E56 Nanotechnology Committees. In addition, he has also testified in federal court as an expert engineer and microscopist.
