Bat Volunteer Training

Want to help others learn about bats?
Each summer, NorCal Bats teams up with Yolo Basin Foundation to run the popular Bat Talk and Tour program. https://yolobasin.org/battalkandtour/

From June 23 to September 26, we’ll host 76 evening events, plus two fun morning sessions for kids called Bats and Crafts.

Each night, four volunteers work alongside a staff lead to set up and run the event. The evening starts at the Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area Headquarters. Volunteers help set up bat displays, arrange guest seating, and load up for the tour. Once guests arrive, volunteers greet and check them in, answer questions about the bats on display, and help everyone get settled.

The Talk lasts about 45–50 minutes, followed by the Tour. Volunteers hand out walkie-talkies, direct guests to the restrooms, and help organize the car caravan.

The Tour includes a short drive through the Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area, ending at a bat viewing spot next to the Yolo Causeway. There, volunteers answer questions, help guests get a good view, sell merchandise, and assist with basic crowd management.

Afterward, everyone helps with clean-up.
Volunteer shifts run about 4.5 hours, including set-up and take-down. Guests are on-site for about 2.5 to 3 hours.
