This informative talk will help you understand why young babies need so much help to settle and sleep.
Reasons include (but are not limited to):
1. Different sleep cycles to adults
2. Neurologically different to an adult - the pathways that give us the ability to regulate our own emotions are not yet developed
3. Require frequent feeding due to having extremely small stomachs and being at a stage of life characterised by rapid physical growth
4. Unable to attend to their own comforts - temperature, soiled nappies, position etc
5. Easily frightened as they do not have a mental 'reference bank' to understand common things eg. shadows, insects, noises
6. Have not yet developed the concept of 'object permanence' - if they cannot see you, feel you, smell you they think you have ceased to exist and this upsets them.
Your baby is hardwired by nature to need another human assist them to settle and fall asleep. We will give you plenty of tips and tricks on how to do this while still looking after yourself.
Research shows that babies provided with consistent, loving attentiveness to their needs grow into more confident, independent, secure children. There will be no sleep training methods presented at this talk though you are welcome to ask questions about how sleep training works and the historical reasons it evolved in western society.
Babies welcome, refreshments provided
We look forward to welcoming you
