About the event

Coal in Dartmouth
A talk by Jonathan Turner of Dartmouth Museum, for the Devonshire Association, about the ship coal bunkering trade into Dartmouth, and the activities of coal lumpers who loaded the coal onto the steamships. Covering the role of Sir Thomas Wilton and Renwick Wilton and Dobson. (Bringing coal for the gas works into Dartmouth for Paignton Gas Works and Exmouth Gas Works, as well as general coal merchants in Devon.)

After the talk, we can walk to Bayards Cove area by the Lower Ferry where the Coal Lumpers operated. There's also an opportunity to visit Dartmouth Museum before or after the talk to see the exhibition on Steam in Dartmouth and the world class 8 models of atmospheric steam engines developed from the original design by Dartmouth engineer, Thomas Newcomen.
