Caring for our Cartilaginous Friends: Shark and Ray Medicine

Have you ever wondered what it is like to provide veterinary care to sharks and rays? Come to the lecture “Caring for our Cartilaginous Friends: Shark and Ray Medicine” to find out! This talk will describe some of the unique anatomy and physiology features of elasmobranchs and how these unique traits translate into how we provide veterinary care for these amazing animals. We will also discuss some of the common ailments of elasmobranchs as well as anesthesia, phlebotomy techniques and diagnostic imaging of sharks and rays.

About Dr. Stevens:

Dr. Brittany Stevens graduated from UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine with an emphasis in zoological medicine. Following graduation, she undertook additional training in zoological medicine including a 1-year internship in wildlife and conservation medicine at the Clinic for Rehabilitation of Wildlife on Sanibel Island Florida and was the inaugural participant in the UC Davis Aquatic Animal Health Fellowship program. Dr. Stevens is recognized as a Certified Aquatic Veterinarian through the World Aquatic Veterinary Medical Association and is a diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners certified in fish practice. She is currently employed at the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, California where she is responsible for providing veterinary services to the aquarium’s diverse collection of over 14,000 animals. Dr. Stevens has authored numerous articles and book chapters on a wide range of topics pertaining to aquatic medicine. Her main research interests include diagnostic imaging, infectious diseases, wound healing and anesthesia of aquatic animals.
