THE HATER by Matt Lyle
THE HATER is a modern (postmodern? meta-modern? doomscroll-core?) adaptation (total bastardization) of Molière’s THE MISANTHROPE reimagined on the battleground of a present-day liberal arts college. Trigger warnings, ideological skirmishes, and contemporary absurdities fly as Al, a history professor with a persecution complex and a superiority streak, sets his sights on the right, the left, and every stupidity in between — everyone, that is, except himself, natch. Everybody else is catching strays.
It’s a savage, cathartic, deeply unserious take on moral hypocrisy, intellectual arrogance, and the never-ending group project that is modern discourse. Molière would sue — or retweet it. Hard to say. Who cares?
WARNING: Part high art and part low-ass comedy, THE HATER is full of old words, new words, banned words, and completely made up words.
