About the event

Faith and Film: June Sermon Series
Join us for our first summer sermon series as we journey through the realms of faith, humanity, and the divine, illuminated by the magic of film.

During the week (first film is on Tuesday, May 27th, following films are on Wednesdays) we will gather in community to view a diverse selection of films that captivate the heart and mind. Each screening will be followed by a discussion where we unpack the film’s themes, symbolism, and relevance to our shared journey. Films start at 6pm sharp in the Don Krehbiel Music Center. Discussion is from 7:45-8:15pm.

But the conversation doesn’t end there. On Sunday mornings, join us as we continue to explore the films and their lessons in worship.

Moana 2 (Film: 5/27, Sermon: 6/1): In Moana 2, a young wayfinder embarks on a new journey of self-discovery, leadership, and the deepening of her connection with the earth and the sea. The film explores themes of community, stewardship of the planet, and the importance of staying true to oneself while embracing the wisdom of tradition. It inspires us to honor our cultural heritage while boldly charting our own course toward a brighter, more inclusive future.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (Film: 6/4, Sermon: 6/8): Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is a visually stunning and thought-provoking exploration of the power of identity, belonging, and collective action. Through the lens of multiple Spider-People, the film highlights the beauty of diversity and the strength we gain from embracing our differences. It speaks to the Unitarian Universalist principles of interconnectedness and justice, reminding us that each of us has the potential to make a difference in our shared world.

Babe (Film: 6/11, Sermon: 6/15): Babe, the heartwarming story of a pig who dreams of becoming a sheepdog, reminds us that kindness, empathy, and the courage to be ourselves are at the heart of transformation. Through Babe’s journey, we are invited to reflect on the importance of compassion and how it transcends species, class, and expectations. The film underscores the power of love and understanding in breaking down barriers and fostering meaningful connections.

The Grapes of Wrath (Film: 6/18, Sermon: 6/22): The Grapes of Wrath, based on John Steinbeck’s classic novel, is a powerful exploration of human dignity, social justice, and the pursuit of a better life. The film challenges us to reflect on economic inequality, the struggles of the marginalized, and the enduring power of hope and solidarity in the face of adversity. It calls us to act with compassion and empathy toward those who suffer and to advocate for justice in the world.

The Way, Way Back (Film: 6/25, Sermon 6/29): The Way, Way Back is a poignant coming-of-age story about personal growth, resilience, and finding one’s place in the world. As the protagonist navigates a difficult summer, the film emphasizes the importance of community and support in overcoming life’s challenges. It reminds us of the value of nurturing and affirming relationships and the transformative power of being true to oneself, even in the face of difficult circumstances.
