The Long Shadow of Shame in Scottish Culture

What role does shame play in Scottish culture? How has it shaped us historically, and where is it hiding in our society today? These are the fascinating questions we will explore at this unique event. The ACEs movement has led to considerable public awareness of the consequences of childhood trauma.

The time seems right for asking why shame is such a frequent component of trauma -- and whether our nation suffers in particular ways from this oppressive emotional state. The event will bring together two leading voices well placed to guide us through this discomforting territory. Carol Craig has been a long-time commentator on Scotland’s sense of self, and Dr Suzanne Zeedyk has a reputation for explaining how emotions affect human biology. Their keynote addresses will be woven into a day of workshops designed to help attendees reflect on personal and professional experiences of shame: where does it come from and how can we tackle it?

The event is part of the year-long initiative marking 20 years of Scotland’s ACEs Journey. It will be wrapped in the warm welcome that has become characteristic of all events hosted jointly by Anam Alba and connected baby. That means absolutely everyone is welcome to join us, because our goal is to foster community conversations. All you need bring is your curiosity.
