About this Event

About the book:

Swanee Burrows, the restless, edgy fifteen-year-old daughter of a scandal-ridden congressman and a beautifully flawed mother, has a penchant for running away: from her boarding school, her parents, her sometime-boyfriend, and herself. A coming of age of both adults and adolescents, True Home, set in a rainswept Pacific Northwest town where good people float in a morass of bad decisions, is a story of interwoven families, teenage angst, deception, and class, where love and betrayal collide, and escape proves deadly.

About the participants:

JANET CLARE has had short fiction and essays published online at Literary Hub, Assignment, Manifest Station, among others, and anthologized in New World Writing, Elm Leaves Journal, The Truth of Memoir, and Spent. Her first novel, Time Is the Longest Distance, was published in 2018. True Home is her second novel. She lives in Los Angeles.

SAMANTHA DUNN's first novel Failing Paris was a PEN West award finalist, followed by the bestselling memoir Not by Accident: Reconstructing a Careless Life, as well as Faith in Carlos Gomez: A Memoir of Salsa, Sex and Salvation.

Sam’s work is anthologized in a number of places, including the short story anthology, Women on the Edge: Writing from Los Angeles, which she co-edited. She has written for the stage and has taken a few turns screenwriting as a member of the Writers Guild of America. Sam currently teaches nonfiction writing at Chapman University and at the literary nonprofit created by Pam Houston, Writing by Writers. She formerly directed Esalen Writers Camp founded by Cheryl Strayed, and was a longtime memoir instructor at UCLA Writers Program. For nearly a decade she was writer-in-residence at the New York State Summer Writers Institute at Skidmore College.
