Tuesday’s hike will be AllTrails “Days Fork Trail”. Start by heading east on Little Cottonwood Canyon Road. After passing Mill D and Jordan Pines Camp Campground, look for the Spruces Campground turnoff on your right. There is a fee for parking at the Spruces Campground. Free parking is available just before entering the campground on the north side of Big Cottonwood Canyon Road. Parking on the south side of the road is not permitted. I suggest we meet at the Park & Ride to carpool. Parking is somewhat limited.
From Big Cottonwood Canyon Road, walk across the road (south) to the entrance of the Spruces Campground. Pass the guard shack and turn right (west) in the parking lot. Just before coming to the western loop of campsites, the road will turn south and pass some restrooms to another parking lot. The trailhead is at the south end of this lot. The initial start of Days Fork Trail is somewhat steep, but soon levels out. The overall trail continues a steady climb south to the upper basin just below Flagstaff Mountain.
Highlights include breathtaking views, wildflowers, historic mining equipment and wildlife encounters. Challenges are steep sections, rocky areas and bugs (bring repellent).
In 2023, sections of the trail were damaged due to heavy flooding. Some trail blazing will be necessary to connect washed out sections of the trail. Sound fun?
Return by backtracking the way you came.
