Wine, Words, & Watercolors: Painting the Legacy of Resistance 🍷🎨📖
Set in a vibrant, creative space, the Wine, Words, & Watercolors event blends history, storytelling, and artistry into an unforgettable evening. With glasses of rich red wine or crisp white in hand, a group of brilliant Black women gather to discuss Kellie Carter Jackson’s We Refuse: A Forceful History of Black Resistance—a powerful exploration of how Black people have fought against oppression throughout history.
As the discussion begins, paintbrushes glide across canvases, inspired by the book’s themes of resistance, revolution, and resilience. Guided by a local Black artist (or a freeform approach for creative expression), attendees use watercolors to depict symbols of Black power—raised fists, Harriet Tubman’s determined gaze, protest signs, or abstract emotions evoked by the book’s powerful narratives.
The conversation flows freely between sips and strokes of color, covering historical moments of rebellion, the importance of collective action, and personal reflections on what resistance looks like today. Laughter, deep discussion, and moments of awe fill the room as members share their artistic interpretations.
The evening concludes with a toast to the unbreakable spirit of Black resistance, a gallery-style showcase of the watercolor creations, and a final reflection on how each woman can continue the legacy of those who fought before us. With books, brushes, and bonds strengthened, the night ends as a celebration of Black history, creativity, and empowerment. 🍷🎨📚✨
