ANY HOPE LEFT FOR NORTH KOREA?
🇰🇵 Doing diplomacy with the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea) is not an easy task. Since the end of the Korean War, changing administrations in both the USA and the Republic of Korea (South Korea) have utilised varying diplomatic strategies, with varying success.🇰🇷
As the Kim regime in North Korea seems more untouchable than ever, drawing legitimacy from its dealings with its big northern neighbour, Russia, it begs the question: are hopes for normalisation and reunification on the Korean Peninsula even tenable anymore? Should we declare our diplomatic efforts as ultimately futile, or is there hope yet if we learn how to engage diplomatically with international pariahs?
⭐️To discuss these critical questions, the Danish Foreign Policy Society U35 has invited Antonio Fiori, Korea expert, President of the Asia Institute and Associate Professor at the University of Bologna🇮🇹 (Department of Political Science).
Prof. Fiori has written extensively on Asian international relations, inter-Korean relations, and is considered a leading expert on the foreign policy of North Korea.
👉👉Uniquely, he has also served as a consultant for the Peaceful Unification Advisory Council of South Korea. In this work, he helped advise the committee on its diplomatic approach towards North Korea.
Since 2011, he has also been teaching continuously at several South Korean universities (Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, Korea University, Ewha Womans University, etc.).
💡Fiori will initially give an introduction to the most important events characterising the DPRK-ROK relationship in both the 20th and 21st centuries. This will be followed by a talk delving deep into the complex politics of the Korean Peninsula.
Moderation: Felipe Oscar Bonilla Branner, Board Member of The Danish Foreign Policy Society U35
🏯The event will, fittingly, be held in the beautiful surroundings of Asia House Denmark, the former headquarters of the Danish East Asia Company. There will be light catering at the event.
This event is in English and only open to members of The Danish Foreign Policy Society (Both U35 and regular). For more info on how to become a member learn more here:
