About the event

Bar' Udenrigspolitik: China in the International System
🇨🇳 We’re excited to invite you to our third edition of our recurring event series, Bar’ Udenrigspolitik, where we, in an informal setting, tackle some of the most important issues in foreign policy currently shaping our world. The event is open to all - grab a friend, have a free beer and listen to some incredible scholars! 🇨🇳

CHINA IN THE INTERNATIONAL SYSTEM
As the USA under Donald Trump finds itself embarking on a new path of self-reliance, rejection of globalization, and with the policy paradigm of America First seeping into every nook and cranny of US foreign operations, it is clear that a power vacuum is steadily appearing on the world stage.

With plenty of maneuvering space to take on more global leadership, China is rapidly framing itself as a counterweight to the US. It has actively reached out to the EU to promote free trade and sent aid workers to deal with the aftermath of the earthquake in Myanmar. At the same time, it is ramping up its investments in the Global South as the American development agency, USAID, goes into an indefinite hiatus.

But what vision for the world order does China have? What are the country’s goals for the international system? And how does its development policy in the Global South work towards furthering this goal? These are some of the questions we will address in our upcoming Bar’ Udenrigspolitik 3.

We’re honoured to be joined by some of the foremost China-experts in Denmark (and Italy).

- ⭐️Liselotte Odgaard, Nonresident Senior Fellow at the Hudson Institute. Her work focuses on US-China-Europe relations, including NATO-China relations; Chinese foreign, security, and defense policy; Indo-Pacific security; and the geopolitics of the Arctic region. She is also a Research Fellow at the Norwegian Institute for Defense Studies in Oslo.

- ⭐️Yang Jiang, Senior Researcher at The Danish Institute for International Studies, where she researches contemporary political economy of China, including diplomacy, economic policy, domestic reform, outward investment, state-owned enterprises, and policy-making.

- ⭐️🇮🇹 Antonio Fiori, President of the Asia Institute and Associate Professor at the University of Bologna. His research interests are in particular inter-Korean relations, the foreign policy of North Korea and the People's Republic of China. In Italy, he teaches various master's courses on East Asian international relations. Since 2011 he has also been teaching continuously at several South Korean universities.

Moderation: Felipe Oscar Bonilla Branner, Board Member of the Danish Foreign Policy Society U35.

The event will be held in the beautiful old library hall of Nordisk Kollegium.

This event is in English and is open to everyone.
