Walk in the Footsteps of Hollywood Icons – Be Photographed by Rainer Hosch
Rainer Hosch has stood face to face with some of the world’s biggest stars. Through his lens, he has captured the gaze and presence of icons like George Clooney, Kim Kardashian, Meryl Streep, Iggy Pop, and Keanu Reeves. Now, Gallery Poulsen is bringing a touch of Hollywood to the Copenhagen Meatpacking District – and offering the public a unique opportunity: Purchase one of Hosch’s works and receive a personal portrait by the photographer himself – in the same iconic style as his famous subjects.
The event marks the opening of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Rainer Hosch’s first exhibition in Denmark since 2015 and part of this year’s Copenhagen Photo Festival.
The exhibition opens the doors to Hosch’s private archive – revealing a selection of never-before-seen portraits of key figures from the worlds of film, art, and music. Some of the works are arranged in graphic contact sheet compositions, creating a mosaic of glances, attitudes, and identities. And in the midst of the glamour, authenticity emerges. Hosch draws from a signature aesthetic inspired by mugshots, passport photos, and vintage photo booths. While many images capture us randomly or without emotion, Hosch creates a unique moment that reveals something real and vulnerable. In his large, intense close-ups, we don’t just see the celebrities – we see the person behind them. The wrinkles. The smile. The vulnerability. As viewers, we’re granted an intimate glimpse of the stars who make up Hollywood’s coveted allure.
At the opening on Friday, June 13, Rainer Hosch will be present in the gallery, which will be transformed into a live photo studio. Visitors can watch him work in real-time – and the next day, Saturday, June 14, all artwork purchasers will have the exclusive opportunity to be photographed by Hosch themselves. Imagine standing exactly where Iggy Pop, Steve Buscemi, or Jennifer Lopez once stood. Being photographed with the same gaze, the same lighting, the same raw intensity. A personal experience – and a work of art in its own right.
Born in Vienna, Hosch’s eye was shaped by the streets of New York, where he documented life on the edge – people, places, and atmospheres. Today, he lives in Topanga Canyon, north of Los Angeles, where he photographs the horizon daily with a camera that remains still while the world changes before it. His photographic expression has become more meditative – yet the human being, the individual gaze, remains central. The exhibition at Gallery Poulsen also marks Hosch’s return to Denmark – he is part of the permanent collection at the National Museum of Photography – and showcases a body of work in constant movement between the documentary and the iconic, between the human and the mythic.
The exhibition presents a number of works that have not been shown before.
Photographer Rainer Hosch will be present at the opening, where visitors will have the opportunity to meet and speak with him.
