On Saturday August 16, 1-3PM, artist and art teacher, Steph Marcus (Cooperstown) will present a super-fun, interactive project using modeling clay. In the current exhibition, Samurai Baseball & More: a fine-arts-look-at-baseball, she displays a series of one-of-a-kind ‘baseball cards’ made with sculpted modeling clay on board, featuring Hall of Famers…as cats ( for instance, ‘Lickey Mantle’ and ‘Rollie Toebeans.’) All are reproduced as collectible baseball cards—both cat and baseball card enthusiasts can build their own sets of favorites!
Each of the 14 pictured is modeled after an actual baseball card, with a few major changes, according to Marcus: “They’re crafted from modeling clay smooshed onto matboard (smooshed is the technical term) and sealed with a clear medium. … And also, they’re cats now!”
“Two of the original cards are enigmatic and expensive --go see the real Honus Wagner card at the Hall of Fame!” she continued.“ Most of the other players are ones she admires, “some of whom I’ve been fortunate enough to meet” she added.
The modeling clay technique “ is quite experimental and so much fun to wrestle with” she added. “ I tried it in a project with fifth-grade students in Oneonta and was loath to stop, so here it is!” All are invited to try their hand at the process. Her display includes two “guest cards” : A Minecraft creeper ballplayer by her son, Theo Shestakofsky, age 6, and a rendition of Trea Turner ( a random card that happened to be on the table) by his playdate friend, Amelia M.
A lifelong Red Sox fan, Stephanie Marcus lives in Cooperstown with her son Theo, husband Jon, and two big kittens, Forest and Stripey. She graduated from Wesleyan University and received an MFA at Lesley University in Boston. She is partial to cartooning, mixed media painting, and has studied printmaking in Venice, Italy and at the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, VT. Her work has been featured in shows from Sacramento to New Orleans, Toronto and New York City, and published in the book CATS ROCK: Felines in Contemporary Art and Pop Culture. She currently teaches elementary school art at Riverside Elementary and Greater Plains Elementary School in Oneonta, NY.
The next Artist-in-Residence-for-the-day, Marcie Schwartzman, will demonstrate her stitchery techniques Saturday August 23, 11-12:30. Free admission. The Art Garage, one mile from town, is open Saturdays 11-3 and every day with a text/call: 315-941-9607 or email
