Alden’s work has been recognized in numerous shows and publications including Ceramics Monthly and Architectural Digest. She spends her time between her Cooperstown studio and her farm in West Winfield where her extended family run an organic grass-fed beef business called Cairncrest Farm. She grew up in Bryn Athyn, PA, earned a biology degree at Gettysburg College and an MFA from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, NE. Her extensive experience includes Peace Corps work in Niger, Africa and teaching ceramics. Her works are "inspired by everyday domestic life and the simplicity of the agrarian landscape,” she noted “The sustaining power of the land to feed, clothe and uplift” drives her studio practice. Her work celebrates the sensuous nature of the clay, with reference to the human form. Her monumental and elegant large-scale vessels contrast with smaller, delicate work.
Accomplished in both oil and pastels, Padgett’s jewel-like pastel still lifes in Splendor in the Everyday, celebrate the season’s blooms and bounty…luscious cherries, verdant fennel and more . “Pastel is a wonderfully versatile, colorful medium,” she noted, “not affected by temperature or humidity, it can go anywhere. No solvents, mediums, or special tools are necessary.” Mary Padgett studied at Boston University (BFA Painting) and Syracuse University (MFA Printmaking). She has taught painting and color courses for Syracuse University and Cazenovia College, and conducts workshops in the US and abroad. She is a signature member of the Pastel Society of America and has been featured in American Artist and Pastel Journal. Her paintings are in numerous private and public collections. Her many exhibitions include competition awards from the Pastel Society of America, the Fenimore Art Museum and the Finger Lakes Plein Air. Locally, her work was first featured at Gallery 53 Artworks in the Smithy in the 1980s. She will be included in the next show, Samurai Baseball & More that will open July 18.
