The 20th Annual Ram Jam
June 28th and 29th
11 AM – 10 PM
The Corn Pound, 6336 Montgomery Drive
Windcrest, TX 78109
Better clear the slate for June 28th and 29th. The 20th Annual Ram Jam, brought to you by Jeff Smith (Hickoids, Saustex Records) and Roland “Nightrocker” Fuentes rocks The Corn Pound 20 years since the passing of Ramiro “Ram” Ayala and Doug “Gypsy” Morgan shuttered our little center of the universe. This two-day festival brings together a lineup of Taco Land bands to honor Ram’s legacy, including reunion shows by the mighty Boxcar Satan and pop punk trio Lucy Loves Schroder.
Ramiro “Ram” Ayala (1933–2005) was the heart and soul of Taco Land, a San Antonio nightclub and beer joint he ran for over 30 years. Known for its cold beer and wild atmosphere, Taco Land became a punk rock hub in the 80s, hosting bands like GWAR, Thrall, Sons of Hercules, Los #3 Dinners and the Butthole Surfers. Ram ruled the roost with a velvet glove cast in iron, suffered no fools, spoke in a cluster of hilarious catch phrases and loved his gaggle of misfit regulars more than anything in the world. He was the de facto godfather San Antonio’s alternative scene until the tragic events of June 24, 2005, when Ram and employees Doug Morgan and Denise “Sunshine” Koger were gunned down during a robbery. Miraculously, Sunshine survived the shooting, took the stand and put the perps behind bars for good.
The Taco Land years were halcyon days for many in San Antonio and beyond. While nothing has managed to fill the hole in our corny little rocker hearts, once a year we conjure the spirit. The Ram Jam celebrates Ram, Doug and Taco Land and the giddy nights spent watching your friends and favorite bands wreak out-and-out havoc all in the name of a good time.
This event is a labor of love, co-produced by Jeff Smith and Roland Fuentes. Smith, through his label Saustex Records, Flagship Records, Jett Bass Recording Studio, Tex Pop In Exile, and High Voltage Music Inc. turned the Corn Pound into a D-I-Y sanctuary, making it the ideal location for this event. Together, Smith & Fuentes have put together a roster of iconic underground acts, with more than a few surprises to come. Writer/curator Anjali Gupta is crowdsourcing photos, flyers and other memorabilia which will be on display along with a collection of Ofrendas organized by Corn Pound resident Bell Solloa, who will also have her personal collection on display.
“Twenty years ago, we lost a true force in our music community,” said Fuentes. “Ram Ayala gave so much to San Antonio’s scene—space to play, gas money to broke bands and a good time you couldn’t buy. I worked with him at Taco Land, saw the magic he made happen, and now, with Jeff Smith, we’re bringing that spirit to the Corn Pound with Ram Jam—raw, real, and loud, just like he’d want it.”
Gates open at 11 AM daily, with music kicking off at noon and running until 10:00. Tickets and additional details will be announced soon. Stay tuned for updates on this tribute to a San Antonio legend, brought to you by his most dedicated champions. Like a quincenera, donate what you can. Just don’t staple bills to the door person.
