This Intro to Navigation Workshop is a practical, hands-on day designed for hikers and walkers who want to build solid, real-world navigation skills using a map and compass. It’s ideal for beginners or anyone looking to refresh and improve their navigation in a supportive, friendly environment with plenty of opportunity to ask questions and practice skills.
We’ll start with an indoor classroom session in Grasmere, covering the essential theory needed for confident navigation. From there, we’ll head out into the Lake District fells, putting those skills into practice on a carefully planned route around the Grasmere area. The surrounding landscape offers classic Lakeland terrain with varied features — perfect for developing strong navigation techniques in the hills.

🗺️ Map reading fundamentals
• Understanding OS maps, scales, symbols & legends
• Using grid references accurately
• Interpreting contours and terrain
• Map-to-ground and ground-to-map techniques
• Pacing and timing for distance estimation
• Using phone mapping apps effectively and responsibly
🧭 Compass skills
• Orientating the map correctly
• Using a compass with the map
• Taking and following accurate compass bearings
• Relocation techniques when unsure of position

• Navigating a simple planned route
• Introduction to the 5 Ds of navigation
• Creating and using route cards
• Practical decision-making while on the hill
