History and recreation collide with Susquehanna National Heritage Area's Bridge Burner Challenge!
Can you rise to the challenge? Join us on Riverfest Weekend to keep the spark alive and participate in the Bridge Burners Challenge!
The Bridge Burner Challenge is a unique run-and-paddle race held on Saturday, June 28, 2025, in Columbia, Pennsylvania, as part of Riverfest. This event commemorates the historic burning of the Columbia-Wrightsville Bridge during the Civil War, when locals prevented Confederate troops from crossing the Susquehanna River.
Participants begin with a 3.5-mile run from Columbia River Park to the Iron Furnaces and back, symbolically collecting 'dynamite' (a race baton) along the way. Following the run, racers embark on a 2.5-mile paddle across the Susquehanna River, dropping off their 'dynamite' on the far side before returning to the starting point. The course features mixed terrain, including sidewalks and paved trails, and includes a railroad crossing.
The race starts at 9:00 AM, with bib pickup available on June 26 and 27 from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, or on race day starting at 8:00 AM. A safety meeting will be held at 8:30 AM at Columbia River Park pavilion. Participants can choose to complete both the run and paddle segments or opt for one. Kayaks, canoes, or stand-up paddleboards can be brought by participants or rented from local outfitters. All paddlers must wear a US Coast Guard-approved personal flotation device and carry a whistle. Participants must be 16 years or older.
Proceeds from the event support the Susquehanna National Heritage Area's educational programs, recreational offerings, and heritage sites in the riverlands corridor.
