About the event

STL City + County Series (Part Two): Demography Is Destiny
Between 2020 and 2024, St. Louis City lost more of its population than any other major American city. But why?

In the second program of our two-part series, Saint Louis University researcher Dr. Ness Sàndoval will explore that demographic declines, spotlight where and how St. Louis is growing, and unpack the consequences of a looming “demographic winter”—the point where St. Louis’s death rate will outpace its birth rate.

In a time when City + County reunification and growth is in the news, this program will provide the context you need to understand how we got to where we are and contribute to the conversation on what comes next for St. Louis.

Please note: Join us for part one of our STL City + County Series on Tuesday, September 23, for a deep dive into the Great Divorce that split up the City and County in 1876.

DR. J. S. ONÉSIMO SÀNDOVAL
J. S. Onésimo (Ness) Sàndoval, a professor specializing in the demography and sociology at Saint Louis University, focuses his research on integrating demography with spatial data science. His work primarily explores the use of big data to analyze socioeconomic and demographic trends in American cities. As a founding member of the Taylor Geospatial Institute, Sándoval plays a key role in advancing research in this field. In his newspaper column, Rediscovering America Through Demography, he writes about the demographic changes that are shaping the United States and the long-term data and statistics with policy, helping communities better understand and adapt to the demographic shifts that affect their lives.
