Afternoon Drawing Party with architect Dennis Chippindale

The second of two drawing parties taking place within – each featuring quick-fire workshops led by inspiring tutors, all in between drinks and snacks.

This afternoon, join Dennis Chippindale: architect, urban sketcher and portrait artist, for a hands-on session exploring portraiture and live sketching. With the exhibition as backdrop and drawing as conversation, Dennis will guide participants through a playful and reflective process of observing and capturing one another.

Dennis Chippindale studied architecture in the early 80’s in Wellington and after registering travelled overseas for 8 years. While working in the UK, France and Germany he had numerous projects that required long commutes, with hours spent on trains or planes. This started a long love of drawing commuters in their habitat. Over the intervening years he has intermittently sketched as most architects do but a few years ago he decided to balance his world of computer-based design with a return to his love of drawing people. His journey has seen him develop from a hack sketcher to someone who can create a likeness in 10 minutes. He’s grown his skills by loving and learning from every mistake to the point he doesn’t feel he’s growing unless he can see things that are wrong. He draws in multiple mediums from cheap ballpoint pens to oil paint and also works in cast glass. He sketches most days and if you’re on the number 8 bus, you might be his next model!

Dennis runs a medium-sized architecture practice, Co-Studio focused on social architecture and practical ways of realising it.
