Romans Return to Fishbourne Roman Palace!
Get ready for a weekend of Roman adventure as Fishbourne Roman Palace is transformed into a bustling corner of the ancient empire! For the first time ever, we welcome The Vicus Reenactment Society - bringing with them a vibrant living history experience filled with crafts, characters, combat, and captivating stories from life in Roman Britain. This is a family-friendly event packed with hands-on history, thrilling arena displays, and fascinating demonstrations, all set in the grounds of Britain’s largest Roman home.
Life in a Roman vicus
Step into the world of a vicus - a lively civilian settlement that grew around Roman military forts, much like the community that may have once supported the early Roman presence at Fishbourne. These communities were home to soldiers, merchants, travellers and locals from all across the empire. As you explore the living history village on the Palace grounds, meet Roman citizens, native Britons, and skilled craftspeople. Watch demonstrations of spinning and weaving, leatherwork, cooking, woodworking, cosmetics, writing, and more - all based on real evidence from 43–123 AD, the same era as the early phases of Fishbourne’s development.
Arena spectacles
Each day features two thrilling arena displays:
In Gladiators in the Arena, a traditional Roman religious procession sets the stage before condemned criminals fight for survival, followed by skilled gladiators battling for glory.
In Get Dressed for Battle & Romans vs Britons, the audience learns how ancient warriors prepared for combat, before cheering them on in action-packed skirmishes between native Britons and Roman soldiers. Expect excitement, audience participation, and plenty of cheers echoing through the Palace grounds!
