Info: Every day, over 100,000 people are waiting for a lifesaving transplant. Another person is added to the waiting list every 10 minutes. 17 people die each day while waiting for an organ transplant. Did you know that one organ, eye, and tissue donor can potentially save and improve the lives of over 75 individuals. African American individuals make up approximately 14% of the U.S. population, and 27% of all patients waiting for lifesaving organ transplants in the United States.
Of the more than 28,000 African American patients on the national waiting list, more than 90% are waiting for a kidney transplant. African Americans are nearly four times more likely to develop end-stage kidney disease than Caucasian people.
In 2024, in Illinois, about 23% of deceased organ donors and nearly 29% of organ transplant recipients were African American.
