Rooting into the Fall: from the lightness of weight to the precision of gesture
Contact Improvisation
1—day Workshop with Rai Cabiró
Chiang Dao, 29 June 2025
During the morning, we will explore fundamental questions in CI, aiming to create individual and shared languages that deepen our understanding of improvisation and unveil the meaning behind —and beyond— our movement.
What must I anchor within myself to hold my partner with clarity and safety?
Can I grow downward and upward at once, rooted in stillness, reaching into the space?
Is it possible to be the root and the bird, solid enough to hold, light enough to rise?
To explore these —perhaps unanswerable— questions, we will structure the study within these three pillars: shared falling, weight transmission, and gesture as a compositional element.
We will start exploring spatial displacement, weight transfer, and precision of gesture from a solid internal axis, with attention to low levels. We will cultivate clarity, responsiveness, and mutual trust, using the floor as a fundamental support, and energy efficiency as a principle of recycling and a driving force of movement.
Then, we will approach the act of falling through the physical laws that govern it: gravity, centrifugal and centripetal forces, and the spiral that begins in the sacrum and expands helically through the spine, generating momentum and amplifying movement. To exemplify this practice, we will draw on principles from Aikido, such as attention in action and redirection of energy, focusing on movement that orbits rather than collides.
Simple structures. Clear presence. Precision in gesture. Efficient movement.
In the afternoon session, we will open the jam framed by a score to harvest what has emerged through movement, composition, and attentive presence. This performative container will allow improvisation to become a form of language, articulation, and balance —a way of holding and being held.

Rai Cabiró (Spain, 1989)
Movement artist and Contact Improvisation researcher with a focus on Authentic Movement and performative arts. Certified Shiatsu therapist, trained at Escola de Shiatsu Contact in Barcelona. He studied performing arts at the Laboratorio Escuela de Expresión Corporal Dramática.
With 15 years of experience in Contact Improvisation, he began his journey into somatic embodiment in 2009, during his studies at Col·legi de Teatre de Barcelona. Since then, his practice has been continuously enriched by disciplines such as Aikido, Capoeira, and Playfight, and deepened through somatic explorations like Axis Syllabus, Body-Mind Centering, Bioenergetics, and Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy.
His research centers around the state of presence within improvisation. He is deeply drawn to unanswered questions, the witnessing of the macro within the micro, and the embodied awareness that can be found in slowness and emptiness. Since 2019, he has been facilitating Contact Improvisation workshops and silent immersions combining Authentic Movement and meditation in nature.
