How can we begin to describe the art of Bob Ostertag? He has done so many extraordinary things. We’re excited to invite you to meet him and hear his story.
Bob Ostertag is a composer, instrument builder, journalist, and activist—though these roles are deeply intertwined in his work. Since the late 1970s, he has built unique instruments to express his ideas, including an early analog sampling rig made from reel-to-reel tape recorders and helium balloons.
Ostertag has collaborated with renowned musicians like Anthony Braxton, John Zorn, and the Kronos Quartet, and his work often blends experimental sound with political urgency. During the Reagan-era civil wars in Central America, he paused his music career to report from Nicaragua and El Salvador, writing for Mother Jones, The Guardian, and more.
He later returned to audio art, using media samples, field recordings, and digital tools to explore war, resistance, and human rights. His career spans commissions from UNESCO, collaborations with artist David Wojnarowicz, and projects on the Balkans conflict. Today, Ostertag teaches at UC Davis, makes music and films, and shares his work freely online under Creative Commons.
