In October 1998, a horrific hate crime shook a small town to its core. The brutal murder of gay college student Matthew Shepard in Laramie, Wyoming, became a national symbol of intolerance and prejudice. In the wake of this tragedy, members of the Tectonic Theater Project travelled to Laramie to interview over 200 residents, capturing their complex reactions, conflicting emotions, and profound grief.
The play, constructed from hundreds of real-life interviews, journal entries, and news reports, is a vital work of verbatim theatre. It invites you into the heart of a community grappling with the aftermath of unspeakable violence, forcing a confrontation with raw emotion and conflicting perspectives. By exploring themes of hate, compassion, and the enduring search for truth, this is more than just a play—it is a powerful living memorial and a crucial conversation for our time, sparking dialogue about tolerance and understanding.
Join us as we bear witness to this pivotal moment in American history. Prepare to be moved, challenged, and inspired by a story that serves as a powerful reminder of the human capacity for both cruelty and empathy.
