About this Event
Two-Day Encaustic Workshop: Land, Sea, and Sky
Dive into the world of encaustic art and discover the beauty of landscapes and seascapes using encaustic wax. This workshop is designed to inspire creativity, encourage freedom in artistic expression, and help you embrace simplicity in your artwork.
Day One: Creating the Composition
Saturday, Nov 22 10:30 AM - 2:30 PM
- Underpainting Creation: Begin by creating your underpainting, which serves as the foundational layer of your artwork. This step involves working with wet materials that need approximately 24 hours to dry, so the workshop day is slightly shorter. Some students might complete their underpainting ahead of schedule.
- Composition Principles: Gain insight into essential composition principles to enhance the visual storytelling of your piece.
- Paper Integration: Incorporate papers into your underpainting by pressing patterns into them using stencils and stamps. This adds an additional layer of texture and visual interest to your artwork.
- Texturing Techniques: Learn to tint and blend joint compound to develop colored, textured underpaintings. Explore various methods of applying the compound without using a palette knife to achieve distinctive textures and effects.
- Dynamic Mark-Making: Practice expressive mark-making and line work to bring energy and movement into your artwork. Use Amanda’s homemade feather tools, along with other unique mark-making tools, to create distinctive marks and lines.
- Fabric Hardener: Use Powertex fabric hardener to create dynamic effects, such as waves or clouds, and add a three-dimensional aspect to your piece.
Day Two: Exploring Encaustic Medium
Sunday, Nov 23 10:30 AM - 4:30 PM
- Encaustic Medium Application: Experience the unique tactile qualities of colored encaustic medium.
- Chalk Paint Conversion: Discover how to turn acrylic paint into chalk paint for added texture and finish.
- Material Experiments: Play with materials like gold leaf, transfer foil, and R&F pigment sticks to add luxurious textures and effects.
- Texture and Patinas: Learn techniques to add texture, create incisions, and apply patinas for rich surface movement.
- Layering with Stencils: Use stencils to introduce layers of dimension into your artwork.
- Surface Techniques: Master techniques for achieving both textured and ultra-smooth surfaces.
- Shellac Burn (Optional): For those interested, receive guidance on applying shellac burn to your painting. Amanda will be helping you achieve this look using the blow torch

What is Encaustic Painting?
Encaustic painting is an ancient art technique that involves using heated beeswax mixed with pigments to create vibrant, textured artworks. Here’s a brief overview:
- Wax and Heat: Encaustic paint consists of beeswax and damar resin, which are melted together to form a smooth, workable medium. This mixture is then combined with pigments to create various colors.
- Fusing with Heat: One of the distinctive features of encaustic painting is the use of heat to fuse layers of wax. Participants will use a heat source, such as a heat gun or encaustic iron, to melt and blend the wax layers on their artwork. This process not only adheres the layers together but also enhances the depth and texture of the piece.
- Creating Texture and Effects: The encaustic technique allows for a wide range of textures and effects. By manipulating the wax while it’s hot, you can create intricate textures, smooth surfaces, or even incorporate other materials like paper or fabric into your artwork.
- Durability and Finish: Encaustic paintings are known for their durability and rich, glossy finish. The wax protects the pigments, making the colors vivid and long-lasting.
In this workshop, you will explore the unique qualities of encaustic painting, learn to handle the heat source effectively, and create your own beautiful, textured artwork using this dynamic medium.
