Introduction to Indigo: Dye a Bandanna or Scarf

Explore the magic of indigo and the beautiful blue on August 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m! Join fiber artist Jan Quarles to learn about indigo, its properties and its history! In this “make and take” workshop, you’ll make an indigo vat, and dye either a bandanna or a scarf using basic patterning techniques. You will also have some practice fabric to learn how to use the indigo vat. Wear old clothes as indigo is a messy process! Ages 12+

ABOUT THE FACILITATOR:

Jan Quarles, of What Nature Leaves, is a long-time fiber artist who works with the beauty of the natural world. She has worked with fiber and color for more than 30 years as a dyer, knitter, sewist, spinner, and weaver. Today, she is an indigo dyer and practitioner of shibori and katazome and deeply loves the magic of indigo. She’s also a botanical printer and often layers indigo into the magic of the printed leaves. Quarles had a solo show of her indigo and botanical prints in Nashville in 2022. She has a botanically printed flag in an international show and has studied with many teachers at Arrowmont, Penland and other craft venues in the US and abroad. She is a former journalist and professor of mass communication in the United States and overseas who has always practiced her fiber arts in the hours that were her own.

WHAT TO BRING:

- Comfortable clothing that you don’t mind getting a bit of dye on
- A packed lunch/snacks
- An eagerness to learn and create
