James T.S. Taylor's Reconstruction: Civil War and Civil Rights in Albemarle

Langbourne Williams Professor of American History at UVA, Dr. Elizabeth Varon illuminates the political career of James T.S. Taylor, the United States Colored Troops veteran who represented Albemarle County in Virginia’s 1867-68 Constitutional Convention and who fought to modernize and democratize Virginia. Varon puts Taylor’s activism in the context of Southern Unionists’ struggle against the reconstructed rebels and “Lost Cause” propaganda.

The talk will be located in Room 206 at the Center at Belvedere.
