John Maynard Day and Independence Commemoration

We dedicate this already auspicious day to remembering John Maynard.

Much of the Fort’s layout is known from a map by John Maynard drawn on July 4th 1746. It shows homes, outbuildings, wells, and stockades, along with names of residents in 1746. The Fort was square-shaped, made with tall posts spaced to allow shooting but prevent entry. Existing houses were connected inside the wall with lean-tos, including a "Great Chamber" with a lookout tower. The hall functioned for church, meetings, or barracks. A cannon in Parker House alerted residents in case of attack, prompting them to seek refuge inside the Fort.
