Arizona cowgirls have reshaped societal norms since 1889 when they participated in our state’s first official rodeo. From ranch owners to the first female rodeo photographer, they have opened new frontiers for and elevated the status of Arizona women.
Dr. Melanie Sturgeon is the Chair of the Board of Directors of the Arizona Women's Hall of Fame. Our mission is to honor, celebrate, and peserve the stories of exceptional Arizona women. She is also the co-fouder and President of the Arizona Women's History Alliance. This organization increases public awareness of the experiences and intergenerational contributions of Arizona women who collectively represent our diversified racial, indigenous, ethinc, cultural, social, economic, and political history. We encourage new research and writing and individual women and women’s organizations to preserve and donate their papers, including photographs and correspondence.
