What is Mindful Walking?
Mindful walking or walking meditation is simply walking without having a destination in mind. Walking without counting our steps or capturing the walk on camera can be a relief and a real opportunity to rest and release tensions. When we walk mindfully, we let go of thinking as best we can and enjoy the sensations of walking. We walk slowly and in silence, bringing our attention to the soles of our feet. We might open our senses and focus on what we hear, smell, see, feel and in so doing we develop a stillness, a connectedness and an embodied awareness. When we tune into the natural environment in this way and become aware of the movement of our bodies, we begin to cultivate mindfulness and wakeful presence. There is no mystery in walking meditation. We simply let go of our ideas of having to get somewhere and we rest in the movement of each step. With each step there is an opportunity to arrive into the present moment. Thich Nhat Hanh describes walking meditation as "kissing the earth with our feet." We walk with gentleness and lightness, resting in each step and simply enjoying our walk.
Sometimes we don't have time to get out into beautiful surroundings but we can still practise mindful walking. If we have only a few minutes at work we might take a few mindful steps to bring ourselves back to the present moment. If we are at home we can practise mindful walking in the kitchen, going up or down the stairs. Wherever we are we can use our steps to come back to our bodies, to get 'out of our heads' and to gain some perspective.
