Mado Smith presents Florida Water

Florida Water is a multimedia exhibition by artist and musician Mado Smith made possible through a grant from United Arts Central Florida and an artist residency at the Casselberry Sculpture House.

The title Florida Water nods to the old cologne used in rituals of cleansing and protection as well as the waterways and rainstorms of Florida itself—its heat its ghosts and the quiet magic found in backyards and gutters. Drawing from dream logic academic and folk traditions and the rhythm of the everyday Smith weaves together images and sounds that feel at once deeply personal and strangely familiar.

The exhibition features new paintings sculptural work and sonic compositions—including selections from a long-brewing collection of songs that will culminate in a forthcoming album. Smith will perform some of these compositions live on June 21 from 6-9PM. Florida Water will offer a candid glimpse into this body of music in its most immersive and atmospheric form.

Each piece acts as part of a larger spell—a porous kind of storytelling that invites the viewer to slow down drift and remember something they didn’t know they’d forgotten- found near the source.
